A staggering 18% of Australian women have lost their job during pregnancy, when they requested or took parental leave, or when they returned to work.
Employers engaging in this behaviour can largely act with impunity because of the time, cost, effort and complexity involved for employees to pursue justice through the legal system. Only 4% of women experiencing discrimination make a complaint to a government agency.
Bumpd is a not-for-profit registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, operating at the intersection of law and technology to help people use the law to protect their legal rights. Our organisation consists of a group of experienced and passionate lawyers, legal designers, technologists, social justice practitioners and digital marketers working together to provide a safe, accessible and robust legal assistance tool for people who have lost their job because of pregnancy or parenting-related discrimination.
Affordable and timely access to legal services are out of reach for many people. But in today’s world we have the opportunity to build technology products faster and cheaper than ever before and in turn, enhance access to the legal system. By embedding deep legal knowledge within a technology product, the expertise of human lawyers can be scaled to serve large numbers of affected people.
We hope our work will play a small but vital part towards the overall mission of equal opportunity in the workplace.

The idea for Bumpd came after multiple people in Daniel’s network suddenly found themselves without a job after falling pregnant or when they tried to return to work following parental leave. It was the same story of blatant discrimination time and time again. In addition, most victims did nothing in response, discouraged by the stress and cost involved in pursuing a legal complaint, on top of caring for a new child. This didn’t seem right.
Drawing on over 10 years’ experience as a corporate lawyer at Gilbert + Tobin and Axiom (where he was seconded to GlaxoSmithKline and General Electric), including several years’ specialising in legal technology and innovation, Daniel sensed this problem was the perfect candidate for an automated solution. Outside of Bumpd, Daniel is working on a number of start-up projects in the legal and technology fields.

Erin brings experience in automation and legal design and currently spends her days working as a Legal Transformation Lawyer at Gilbert + Tobin. She brings knowledge and insight in numerous digital platforms, along with expertise in legal Artificial Intelligence software.
Erin has a passion for community as well as social justice, and has done a considerable amount of volunteer work for NGOs and community legal centres. She completed the Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne in 2019, where she won the award for “Best Law App”, and has been working in legal innovation at Australia’s top law firms since graduation. She is delighted to have the opportunity to work on Bumpd where she can use her knowledge in legal innovation to provide access to justice.

Sara is a final year Juris Doctor student at Melbourne Law School who has a strong interest in the intersection between technology and the law. Prior to beginning her studies in law, Sara lived and worked in Seattle as a digital marketer for various technology organisations, from startups to enterprise-level companies.
She is keen to bring the perspective and skills she gained in her prior career to the law and is always on the lookout for exciting and meaningful projects aimed at increasing access to justice through the aid of technology and design thinking.

Eleanor is a passionate advocate for creative solutions to social issues. She is currently studying a Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne and has developed an interest in leveraging legal technology to improve access to the legal system. She believes in the importance of organisations such as Bumpd that enable people to pursue justice without facing exorbitant legal costs.
Prior to commencing her studies, Eleanor gained experience in the not-for-profit sector in leadership and fundraising roles. This included leading a team of young people working to create conversations about socialised gender roles and stereotypes as Executive Officer of Chalk Circle, the Gender Literacy Foundation.
